This is one of the rules present as ‘add-on’ in the book VIII·XII·XX Expanded Rules. I have decided to post it here in a system-less form as a sample of what is present in this book.
May the fun be always at you table!
A character can have retainers: the GM is free to determine where and which NPC are available based on the game setting. The process of NPC creation presented in Personæ is highly recommended.
NPCs initially follow a character for a wage or reward. Over time, depending on the level difference between the PC and NPC and the length of their relationship, these hirelings may become true followers, as shown in the table below:
The table above indicates the multiplier to apply based on the level difference and duration of service provided by the NPC to the PC. This multiplier affects both wages and rewards. Wages refer to the regular payment required for the NPC’s services, as determined by the GM according to the game setting. Rewards are additional payments, typically agreed upon when a character requests actions that put the NPC’s life at risk, often equal to a year’s wage.
A multiplier of zero means that the NPC has evolved from hireling to true follower and no longer requires payment. The GM may reduce the multiplier for characters with high Empathy/Charisma scores or a strong reputation from notable actions in the region. Another adjustment the GM may apply is the Morality index, based on alignment with the NPC’s path, whether positively or negatively aligned.

I encourage my players to hire retainers, especially men-at-arms. Never know when you're going to need an extra sword arm or three!
