I love this perspective. It's actually proven that "play" - especially in childhood - teaches empathy. What could be a more empathetic form of play than roleplaying as a character who's different than yourself!
That is the 'sunny side' of the thought... let me insist on the 'shadows' as well: any RPG without role-play becomes a videogame with paper, pencils and miniatures where players look only after how to maximize their character for the next level boss... (with all the consequences this model brings!)
