This is one of the rules present as ‘add-on’ in the book VIII·XII·XX Expanded Rules. I have decided to post it here in a system-less form as a sample of what is present in this book.
May the fun be always at you table!
This post has been inspired by the thoughtful post here below, my kudos to
for letting me add my two cents on this topic!Joint spellcasting in your FRPG? Here’s how you can fit it with the following add-on rule!
Ever thought about casting spells together with your party? With this add-on, multiple casters can combine their powers in two powerful ways: Shared Spells and Rituals. Here's how it works:
Shared Spellcasting: this option enables low-level casters to afford high-level spells with lower risks than single-spellcasting to have backfire/failure and so forth.
Casters must follow the same Path/School/Alignment and know the same spell (both for arcane and divine magic).
Two or more casters split the spell cost equally.
Casting takes longer (+1 turn per additional caster).
(For VI·VIII·X) for sorcerers:
No single spell addend (SA) can exceed the combined dominant word scores.
If the cost exceeds the strongest caster’s (IN+ERU), everyone takes 1d6 backfire damage!
Ritual Spellcasting: this option allows to obtain outcomes which are not granted by ‘ordinary’ spells, like grating permanent magic powers to an item or whatever is the target.
Always requires a High Priest to lead (note: this is a special class).
Effects can be massively altered: duration, area, even permanence!
GM decides what's possible and how long it takes.
Two ritual participants count as three (with a “virtual” third helper statted at default average scores).
All stats of participants (and the virtual one) are pooled.
Everyone shares thoughts and emotions during the ritual (total mental link!).
After casting, all participants are either exhausted or stunned, depending on how epic the effect is.
This opens the door for unforgettable moments of collaboration and raw magical power. Ready to link minds and light up the world?
Very cool ideas here. Never even considered the ideas and possibilities regarding spell-sharing and cost-splitting.
I really like this!
